We held a four-day school health instructor training program starting August 7th. The main objective this time was to conduct research lessons on school health at both the Battambang and Phnom Penh Teacher Training Colleges. On Day 1, we first held the opening ceremony at Battambang Teacher Training College, followed by a workshop by Professor Asakura on \u201cMethods for Research Lessons.\u201d This time, we all traveled together by bus between Phnom Penh and Battambang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We conducted research lessons on school health for the first time at Cambodian teacher training colleges. On the morning of August 8th, we observed Mr. Chan Ra’s lesson on \u201cPersonal Hygiene and Health\u201d at Battambang Teacher Training College. On the morning of August 9th, we observed Ms. Lok Solinda’s lesson on \u201cGrowth and Development\u201d at Phnom Penh Teacher Training College. During the post-lesson discussions, participants shared opinions on \u201cwhat went well\u201d and \u201careas for improvement,\u201d seriously discussing how to incorporate these insights into their own teaching. It was a meaningful two days where the faculty members demonstrated their initiative, speaking candidly and sincerely engaging with the unfamiliar subject of health education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the fourth day, we conducted a Field Study, visiting the National Institute of Special Education (NISE). We heard about teacher training and teaching material development for special needs education, followed by a tour of a school (covering kindergarten through high school) attended by children who are blind and deaf. Several TEC faculty members had previously undergone short-term training at NISE. TEC also plans to teach students about \u201cDisability and Education\u201d and \u201cInclusive Education\u201d within the School Health curriculum.
